General Notes: Wife - Mollie M. Riker
Mollie Marie Riker Porter died quietly of old age Oct. 7, 2015, in Grass Valley, California.
She was born on her family's dairy farm outside Stanwood, Washington in Victoria Heights, Nov. 1, 1924, 20 minutes before her twin brother Andrew "Bud" William Riker (d. 1944), to parents Neal Daniel Riker (1894-1956) and Amalie "Millie" Sovig Riker (later Pigort) (1896-1972). Mollie and Bud were the fourth and fifth of five children; older siblings were Claudie Riker Foley (1913-1988), Dorman Neal Riker (1916-1944) and Lloyd George Riker (1919-1979). Neal Riker, who became a logger when he moved to Washington, was born to George Washington Riker and Mollie (Mary Malvina) Tomlinson Riker in Lebanon, Missouri. Millie was the daughter of Norwegian immigrants Henry Sovig (in Norway: Halvard Johannes Erickson) and Marie Pederson Sovig, and the first of their children to be born in the United States.
Mollie attended the Victoria school and then went to high school in East Stanwood. She also attended school in Arlington when the family lived there for a time. Her best friends were her twin brother, her cousin Doris "Dip" Peterson, three sisters in Arlington Annette, Mary Jane and their third sister whose name escapes us all and her stepsister Elsie Pigort Tjerne.
Mollie attended the University of Washington for three years, majoring in economics. She met Californian Albert Porter on the tennis courts; he was in the Navy and had been sent to the UW to study aeronautical engineering.
Al was not allowed to leave the campus without permission, so he and Mollie found a sympathetic minister who agreed to marry them on Christmas Day, 1944, because that was the only day Al was allowed off campus. After Al's graduation and the end of the war, Mollie and Albert relocated to his hometown, Santa Cruz, California.
Mollie and Al had three daughters, Allison, Mary Jo and Laurie. In 1953 the family relocated to Palo Alto when Al got a job in San Francisco, and remained there until their retirement to Grass Valley, California. Mollie began working part time when Laurie was in elementary school and eventually became a full-time employee of the Stanford Business School. Mollie was so skilled and motherly that the school decided to put her in charge of mentoring new professors; one of the professors she helped was Ben Bernanke and when he later became Chair of the Federal Reserve she couldn't have been prouder.
Mollie's life was marked by close ties to her family and friends, a love of both the outdoors and curling up on the couch with a book, and active participation in her community. She always worked at the polls on election day, went door-to-door collecting for the March of Dimes, and attended and worked at every school function, especially "Field Day" at Stanford Elementary School.
She loved to hike, swim, and ski, she was an enthusiastic gardener, and was a passionate reader of both novels and history, going through many serious "phases" where she would read everything she could get her hands on by her favorite writers or about her favorite subjects. Never lacking for an obsession, she filled the family's dinner table with stories about Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, the Irish Potato Famine, Peter Freuchan's Book of the Eskimos, Queen Victoria, John Adams, and Samuel Pepys, among other interests both passing and enduring. In music her tastes ran to Bob Dylan, The Lovin' Spoonful and the Police (especially Sting). Mollie was always deeply engaged in current events and politics. Allison's first political memory is of stuffing envelopes for Adlai Stevenson. A few decades later Mollie wore her Jesse Jackson "Keep Hope Alive" T-shirt until it fell apart.
Mollie was also an outstanding cook and especially enjoyed serving Norwegian food - yes, fish for breakfast. She never tired of telling the story of how, in her childhood, the lucky kids who had had "kumla" for dinner the night before (potato dumplings in ham broth) would all try to one-up each other bragging about how many they had eaten.
Mollie sewed her and her daughters' clothes, knit everyone sweaters, and always greeted her kids at the door with her full attention (even putting down her latest book) starting with, "Tell me about your day." She was a mother who would instantly accept "I just have to finish this chapter," as an excuse to get out of any household task. She loved to have her children's friends around, and they continued to visit her long after her children moved away.
Mollie suffered increasing non-specific dementia in the last several years of her life, but even when she couldn't remember what she'd done two minutes before she retained a cheerful outlook and an amazing sense of humor. She kept the spontaneous ability to make and laugh at complex verbal jokes, and expressed great appreciation for everyone who cared for her, several times a day. She died quietly and without pain, just slipping away.
Mollie is survived by her husband, her three daughters, her grandchildren Mariya Sweetwyne and Andrew "Bud" Porter, step-grandchildren Eve, Zack and Jacob Zaller, her brother Lloyd's children, Craig, Dennis ("Pinky"), Mike and Linda Riker, and numerous great- and great-great nieces and nephews. Her sister and brothers pre-deceased her (both Bud and Dorman died in World War II), as did her sister Claudie's children, David and Ann Larsen.
No services were held; her life was celebrated at a family brunch followed by Mollie's favorite hike in the Sierra foothills.
Mollie's daughters and grandchildren are hoping to get together with their cousins in the Stanwood/Arlington area at some not-too-distant date to celebrate the lives of all our family members who are no longer with us.

General Notes: Wife - Ranveig Rikolvsdotter
