Martin Pederson was born in Norway, on September 16, 1863, and grew to manhood there. He learned the harness making trade, which he practiced all his life. He immigrated to America in 1888, coming to Britton, S.D. where he began working as a harness maker. Anna Kaisa Nelson was born near Karlstad, Sweden on July 6, 1862. As a young woman she worked in Christiania, (Oslo) Norway for a few years, durin g which she met and fell in love with Martin Pederson. She immigrated to America in 1890, coming to Britton, where her lover was working. There she worked as a maid in the well-to-do homes. Shortly thereafter Anna and Martin were married in Britton. Some time later they moved to Roberts County, taking a homestead near Eddy Post Office, now Claire City. Here they made their home, part of the time living in a sod shanty, until 1899, during which time two daughters and one son had been born to them. They sold their homestead rights to Sam Satre, who later became a legislator at Pierre, S.D. The Pederson family moved to Sweden, where Mrs. Pederson had inherited her parents' farm, being the oldest of a family of girls. Three years, and one son later, they sold the farm in Sweden and came back to Roberts County, S.D. On their way back from Sweden, while staying overnight in New York, Martin decided to see the city in the evening after the family was settled in the hotel. Being the 'man of the house' he carried the total finances which they had netted from the sale of the farm in Sweden. He evidently imbibed a few too many and someone 'rolled' him, leaving the family penniless in a strange land. Fortunately Anna's sister and husband were travelling with them, and had enough money to take the group back to Dakota. Returning to Roberts county they rented farms near where they had originally homesteaded, until in 1906 when Martin was killed in a run-a-way while returning home from Lidgerwood, N.D. with supplies for the winter. Martin passed away on October 1, 1906. Shortly thereafter Anna, with her little family, which had now grown to three sons and two daughters, the oldest 14 years, moved back to Marshall County, after buying a small farm in the hills south of Veblen, where she lived until the time of her death on Nov. 9, 1940.
Alma Carolina was born on October 16, 1893. As a young woma nshe lived in Marshall County. She was united in marriage to Iver J. Hanson in 1914. Iver was the son of another pioneer of eastern Marshall County, Jacob Hanson. Her husband worked in road construction, and in later years as a blacksmith, retiring to the Bay area in California, to be near their three sons and their families who lived there. Marv in works for a baking company in San Jose; Casper and his three sons are in the cement construction business; and Orva l is in the con-struction business and lives near Oakley,, Calif. Iver passed away in 1976. Alma lives in retirement at Oakley, California, which has been the Iver Hanson home in recent years.
Nils Peter was born on March 13, 1895, in Roberts County, S .D. on the original Pederson homestead. Nils was married to Bertha Voight, on June 25, 1919. She was the daughter of Henry and Johannah Voight, another early pioneer family of Northeastern Marshall County. They lived near Veblen for a few years where Nils was a farmer. Later Nils and Bertha moved to Viking, Alberta, Canada. where they engaged in farming. They moved back to the U.S. settling on a farm near Hayward, Wis. then to California, and later to Seattle, Wash, where Nils worked as a builder and painter. Then they moved back to Wisconsin where they retired to live where most of their children live. Their children are; Dolores (Mrs. Glen Alexander, Hay-ward); Melvin; Gordon; Theodore; all of Hayward; Frederick, Seattle, Wash.; Helga (Mrs. Nordin, Laramie, Wyo.) Helen (Mrs. Shirley, Barrington, Ill.). Nils and Bertha were blessed with three sets of twins, five of whom are still living (one twin passed away shortly after birth). Bertha passed away at Hayward in 1972. Nil s is retired and lives at Hayward.
Margi Alvilda was born in Roberts County at the original Pederson homestead, on November 3, 1896. She grew to womanhood there and on the Pederson farm in Marshall County. She was united in marriage to Clive S. Gibson, of Veblen, S.D. o n October 25, 1926. Clive's parents were also pioneers o f Marshall County. They lived for a few years near Viking, Alberta, Canada, where Clive operated a butcher shop. They m oved back to Veblen and later to Eden, S.D. where Clive served as a rural mail carrier for a few years. After a short illness, Clive passed away on February 6, 1936. Margi, with her two daughters, farmed near Lake City for a few years and then moved to Veblen, and later to Sisseton. Her daughters, Maureen and Arlys both became registered nurses. Maureen was married to Alexander Dombrausky. They own and operate a supermarket at Kingston, Wash. Alex also owns and operates a commercial fishing business at Neah Bay, Wash. Arlys is married to John Chesnutt, who is in the world of finance at Portland, Ore. They have three sons. Margi has her own apartment at Kingston, Wash.
Carl Oscar was born on July 6, 1900 near Karlstad, Sweden, during the time when the Pederson family lived in Sweden at the turn of the Century. He came with the family to Roberts County in 1901. He decided to try for an education. He graduated from high school at Sisseton, SD., from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D., Luther Theological Semi nary, St. Paul, 1929, and was ordained that same year at Sisseton. S.D. In 1940 he received his Doctor of Sacred Theology degree from Chicago Lutheran Seminary. He served paris hes in Elk Mound, Wis., La Crosse, Wis. and Seattle, Wash. Presently he is a professor at Faith Evangelical Luthera n Seminary in Tacoma, Wash., and is also president of the Board of Regent of the Seminary. Carl was united in marriag e to Jeanne Borreson of St. Paul, Minn in 1929. She is a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Hans M. Borreson, who came as immigrants from Norway late in the last century. She lived in Iowa during her childhood and came with the family to St. Pau l in 1914. She attended the University of Washington, and has been interested in music and working with her husband. Jeanne and Carl live in Seattle, Washington.
Theodore Martin was born near Claire City, Roberts County , on March 15, 1903. Ted spent the early years operating the old home farm near Veblen. Later he moved to Seattle, Wash. where he has carried on a successful business in the construction field. He was united in marriage to Rachel Moran, also of the Veblen area. They have eight children: Richard, Theodore, Raymond, Leroy, Shirley, Karleen, Gladys and Leona, living in various parts of the country, and actively busy in their chosen professions. Ted and Rachel are both still active. Ted is still actively busy with construction, and Rachel is head cook in one of the largest hospitals in Seattle.
The little family of foreigners started at the turn of the century by two determined immigrants, has grown into a `clan' of more than 300 people. The 'Pederson Clan' has started a family reunion, which will be held from time to time as the years go by. This last year (1978) about 150 Pederson-related folks met for reunion at Lac Couer derelies, near Hayward. Wis. for a week-end of reminiscence and for coun ting past blessings.
